BINDU SUBRAMANIAM Music Life SAPA Bangalore

Meet Bindu Subramaniam. A brilliant singer, now focussed on growing an academy that teaches children music to shape their new thinking, confidence and empower them to take on the world. Called SaPa – It’s the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts based in Bangalore where this young woman has trained thousands of little girls to use music for change. Bindu likes to call it the next generations of musical talent platform. She runs SaPa single-handedly with the help of her music maestro family. As daughter of legendary violinist L Subramaniam and famous singer Kavita Krishnamurthy’s daughter Bindu’s life is a celebration of love for music and experimenting the new.

Bindu Subramaniam is a brilliant singer, now focussed on growing an academy that teaches children music to shape their new thinking, confidence and empower them to take on the world.

“I have been exposed to music since the time I was born. Even though I studied law, I had to come back to music eventually,” says Bindu. “Music was always a part of my life that I kept coming back to. I always knew that even though I keep seeking for a change in passion, music was always something I would spend my entire life doing. The other project with my brother, a band, SubraMania, which was started in 2013, is another chapter of music which I enjoy rather clinically. It promotes contemporary world music which is closer to my heart. Enchanted seeing the ethereal quality in kids, I started up SaPa. I would say I am fortunate enough to launch such a project that bring music to almost twenty thousand children irrespective of background and circumstances,” added Bindu.

We were at SaPa to catch up with Bindu when we saw students going in  and out of the campus. I caught up with some children to know what inspires them to learn music. “Music is sometimes loud and sometimes soft but the real feelings come when it’s a nice blend of notes and cords. Music should always be a form that sounds nice to the ear. And, most of all music has the ability to heal your scars.” Another girl said, “Music is half of my heart because it gives me the joy, singing in school, and it makes me feel alive.”

Music is a great outlet and connector for young children. Community music programs can be a good driver of tolerance, appreciation and understanding of our diverse cultures.

Music can transform the brain structure in little children. If the brain is a muscle, then learning to play an instrument and read music is the ultimate exercise.

Bindu has received Honorable Mentions at the 16th and 17thAnnual Billboard Song Contests and was aTop 20 Finalist (Performance) at the 12th Annual Unisong International Song Contest (2009). Her debut solo album Surrender was released in 2011 and was nominated for a GiMA. In 2012, she was named as one of 12 Gen Next Achievers by Verve Magazine.

Bindu is a Singer, songwriter, pianist and now an entrepreneur. She has dabbled with various forms of music. But over the years, she has created a style that she calls uniquely her own. This law graduate has put SaPa at the centre of her mission.

BINDU SUBRAMANIAM Bindu admits finding her own identity didn’t happen overnight. She says discovering what you want to do can take you sometime. She has a deep connect with international music and Bindu loves to write and sing English songs. “I love jazz, but since I have grown up in a household of music, my influences have been diverse. It’s also dependent on what we are in the mood for.”
